No, the IPR-10G2-HMDI is designed to work independently of a host system. Initial setup and all control can be done remotely. It is also possible to attach an IPR-10G-SDI to a host computer for initial setup via USB, but this is provided as an option rather than a necessity.

No software is required for regular operation. However, for deployment and regular maintenance, you should check the device firmware against what is available online at AJA.com. See Release Notes and Manual for more information.

Yes. IPR-10G-SDI supports SMPTE ST 2110, and specifically the following parts:

  • 2110-10 (System Timing)

  • 2110-20 (Uncompressed Video)

  • 2110-21 (Traffic Shaping for Uncompressed Video)

  • 2110-30 (PCM Audio)

SMPTE ST 2110 is a standard from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) that describes how to send digital video over an IP network.

SMPTE ST 2110 permits granular transport of individual separate essence streams supporting video, audio and metadata. As such, unlike ST 2022-6/7, the data is not simple packetization of SDI. ST 2110 incorporates the following in three or more different IP packet streams:

• Audio: Multiple channels of audio may be transmitted in a single packet stream, or split up into different groups of audio channels in different streams.

• Video (from active area)

• Metadata

The different streams of audio/video/metadata are all synchronized with each other using RTP timestamps.

When mapping from an SDI source to SMPTE ST 2110, since the data in the blanking is not implicitly included in the packetized video stream, the only way to transmit ancillary data such as timecode, Closed Captioning, etc. is in the metadata stream. Any data that is not in the metadata stream is NOT transmitted.

There are several parts that comprise SMPTE ST 2110, the parts currently supported by IPR-10G-HDMI are:

• SMPTE ST-2110-10: system timing and synchronization or the standard formerly known as SMPTE ST 2059 parts 1 & 2 (PTP, or Precision Time Protocol).
• SMPTE ST-2110-20: uncompressed video or VSF TR-03 or IETF RFC 4175.
• SMPTE ST-2110-30: uncompressed PCM Digital Audio or AES67.

It’s important to note that each channel of ST-2110-20, ST-2110-30 (and where applicable ST-2110-40) are carried over separate IP streams or essences. AJA’s IPT-10G2-HDMI and IPR-10G2-SDI transmitters take an incoming baseband signal and effectively separates the video, audio, and metadata to be transmitted as separate IP streams along with PTP timing information. AJA’s IPR-10G2-HDMI, IPR-10G2-SDI and IPR-10G-HDMI receive these streams, and they are reassembled and aligned with the timing information provided in each stream essence.

For more information, please see https://www.smpte.org/st-2110.

No. Instead, see AJA’s IPR-10G2-HDMI which does support hitless switching for SMPTE ST 2110 (as defined in SMPTE ST 2022-7).

IPR-10G-HDMI supports SMPTE ST 2110 only. There is no support for SMPTE 2022-6/7.

SMPTE ST 2110 is ideal for production workflows since this provides uncompressed video together with the flexibility to route essence streams separately (i.e., audio essence could be separately rerouted through processing on the way to another destination).

Note: SMPTE ST 2022-6/7 is better suited for delivery to Master Control, or critical inbound/outbound feeds since this provides uncompressed video together with limited room for error (i.e., single stream means audio, video and metadata cannot be accidentally separated along the way).

Yes, IPR-10G-HDMI can receive from Narrow/Wide senders.

Yes, IPR-10G-HDMI can receive in either “Linear” or “Gapped” Mode.

There are two methods available for initial setup and updating firmware for IPR-10G-HDMI:

  • Web browser on host computer connected to the same network as the IPR-10G-HDMI

  • AJA eMini-Setup application running on host computer directly connected to IPR-10G-HDMI via USB

Web browser: IPR-10G-HDMI requires a network connection for initial configuration, control, and firmware updates. 10 GigE IP Mini-Converters are shipped from the factory with DHCP enabled, and support automatic network discovery via SSDP and MDNS.

AJA eMini-Setup: eMini-Setup is a stand-alone application available from AJA, that can be used to set up IPR-10G-HDMI via direct USB attachment to a macOS or Windows host. Once set up and functional, the USB connection is no longer required.

10 GigE (10 Gigabit Ethernet)

Yes, both Unicast or Multicast setups are supported.

A switch is highly recommended for any critical production needs. SMPTE ST 2110 transmitter to IPR-10G-HDMI connections can be point-to-point, but there will be limitations. For example, a switch is required to take advantage of multicast and/or routing transmission data to multiple destinations and without a PTP clock, there is no way to ensure lock. Baseband signals may appear miss aligned or intermittent.

For any critical production work, you will need to use a switch. A switch is also required in order to take advantage of SDP, multicast and/or routing transmission data to multiple destinations.

For initial setup/testing, you do not necessarily have to use a switch, as connections can be made point-to-point. However, without a PTP clock, there is no way to ensure lock. Baseband signals may appear miss aligned or intermittent.

Since AJA isn’t involved in the fundamental design and framework of your IT infrastructure, we highly recommend you work alongside IT professionals when designing, maintaining, upgrading and supporting the IP video infrastructure.

Use a high quality managed (configurable) switch that is IGMP aware.

For SMPTE ST 2110 specifically, switches should also be PTP aware. Spanning Tree Protocol is supported.

Discovery, registration and network control are not part of SMPTE ST 2110.

Instead, there are a number of methods available, supported via a dedicated Ethernet management port, or in-band via media ports:

  • NMOS Rx discovery and control according to standards IS-04 v1.2 and IS-05 v1.0

  • Ember+ control (no discovery, control only)

  • AJA REST API control (discovery via SSDP or MDNS)

Yes, IPR-10G-HDMI supports NMOS Receive according to standards IS-04 v1.2 & IS-05 v1.0.

Yes, IPR-10G-HDMI supports the latest version of Ember+ SDK (v1.6.2).

Timing is achieved via a SMPTE ST 2059 compliant PTP clock.

Yes, IPR-10G-HDMI is compliant with PTP, PTPv2.

For production needs an ST 2059 compliant PTP clock is highly recommended. Without a PTP clock, there is no way to ensure baseband lock. Presence of an ST 2059 compliant PTP clock will be required if troubleshooting any issues with AJA Tech Support.

Yes, IPR-10G-HDMI is compliant with SMPTE ST 2059-1, standard to derive video audio and time references using the SMPTE Epoch (Jan 1, 1970, 00:00 GMT).

One channel via HDMI (1.4b)

Eight channels via HDMI (1.4b)

Two channels (via dual RCA, unbalanced)

No ANC data support at this time.

  • HD via HDMI: Uncompressed, 1080 60p, 4:2:2, 10-bit, YCbCr, or, 4:4:4, 10-bit, RGB

  • UltraHD via HDMI: Uncompressed 3840 x 2160 30p, 4:2:2, 10-bit, YCbCr, or, 4:4:4, 10-bit, RGB

Note: IPR-10G-HDMI will only receive YCbCr, however, is capable of automatically outputting 4:4:4, 10-bit, RGB, if the receiving device communicates this preference via EDID.

10 GigE (10 Gigabit Ethernet)

See IPR-10G-HMDI Technical Specifications in Appendix B in the IPR-10G-HMDI manual for those modules we have tested. Similar modules may work fine, but if you run into problems, AJA will require you resort to using SFPs we have explicitly tested and recommended before AJA assisted support/troubleshooting can begin.

Note: Maximum supported SFP+ power is 500 mW per SFP+ cage

Optical SFPs should be used. Copper or emSFPs* will draw too much power and may cause damage and or operating instability, voiding the product’s warranty.

* emSFP modules are third party hot-pluggable I/O devices.

Yes, but note these are cables are extremely short and not appropriate for longer cable run needs.

A single cage can be utilized. Both cages are required for Hitless Switching functionality.

Additional to dual 10 GigE SFP cages, IPR-10G-HMDI provides:

  • 1 GigE dedicated Control Port for remote setup and control (Media Ports can be used instead)

  • USB for local setup and configuration when desired.

  • HDMI 1.4b output.

  • Analog Audio output (dual channel).

  • Ref: Reserved for future potential features.

  • Power

Please see IPR-10G-HMDI Technical Specifications in Appendix B in the IPR-10G-HMDI manual.

For SMPTE ST 2110, compatible 10 GigE receivers are IPR-10G2-HDMI, IPR-10G2-SDI and IPR-10G-HDMI. These units will receive SMPTE ST 2110 and format the data for output over either HDMI or SDI.

Compatible 10GbE transmitters are IPT-10G2-HDMI, IPT-10G2-SDI. These units will receive HDMI or SDI and format the data for output as SMPTE ST 2110.

For SMPTE ST 2110, AJA KONA IP, AJA Io IP or Avid Artist DNxIP are compatible with each other and IPR-10G-HDMI.

Yes. IPR-10G-HDMI will receive video and audio from third party devices which support SMPTE ST 2110. AJA works alongside other vendors at interop events arranged by AIMs. The SMPTE ST 2110 standard, together with these frequent interop events are designed to ensure customers can feel comfortable when planning/integrating an entire facility with equipment from numerous vendors.
