Overview

BRIDGE LIVE is a broadcast quality, low-latency turnkey system that enables Remote Production (REMI), Synchronous Multi-Channel Video Contribution, Remote Collaboration, Direct to Audience Streaming, and Multi-Bit Rate/Multi-Format Delivery via a diverse range of IP video standards, SDI, or both. New to the BRIDGE LIVE family is the BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4, a high-density multi-channel UHD version of BRIDGE LIVE that supports up to 4x bidirectional 12G-SDI I/O. 

BRIDGE LIVE, a collaborative effort between AJA and Comprimato, is designed to provide the performance, reliability, and user-friendly interface required for critical live encode, decode, or transcode applications. Via two models equipped with either 12G-SDI or 3G-SDI I/O, BRIDGE LIVE offers the necessary power and flexibility to enable real-time, bidirectional encoding, decoding, and transcoding for demanding UHD or HD workflows. BRIDGE LIVE is an indispensable component of any contemporary video production toolkit.

BRIDGE LIVE, with its compact and robust 1RU form factor, offers redundant power supplies and a comprehensive three-year warranty (with an option to extend it to five-years), providing steadfast reliability for demanding applications such as global live concerts and sporting events.

SRT is an open-source video transport protocol and technology stack that optimizes streaming performance across unpredictable networks, providing secure streams and easy firewall traversal, bringing the best quality live video over unreliable networks. The SRT Alliance is a collaborative community of industry leaders and developers dedicated to achieving lower latency internet video transport by continuously improving open source SRT. Encryption built into the SRT protocol ensures secure streaming video content delivery with low-latency and secure reliability.

BRIDGE LIVE supports SRT bonding, enabling redundant stream support over an ISP to ensure hitless delivery of the originating source.

BRIDGE LIVE fully supports Closed Captioning as well as additional metadata, which is often a neglected feature set compared to other encode/decode solutions.

Simultaneous Bidirectional Encoding and Decoding

BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4 and BRIDGE LIVE 3G-8 support simultaneous bidirectional encoding and decoding from UltraHD (BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4 only), HD, and SD baseband sources. Both models support UltraHD from IP-based sources.

For example, with a pair of BRIDGE LIVE systems, a broadcast facility can receive three incoming encoded camera sources from a remote location and decode them back into SDI for editing and production while simultaneously providing program return to the remote location. This example shows 4-channel capability on BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4, while BRIDGE LIVE 3G-8 supports up to 8x HD channels.

Synchronous Multi-Channel Transport

BRIDGE LIVE supports independent SDI source inputs and maintains synchronous relationships while transporting the content to end-point destinations. This functionality can take place between a pair of BRIDGE LIVE units for a synchronous end-to-end SDI workflow, often referred to as SDI backhaul or site-to-site SDI workflows.  

BRIDGE LIVE’s synchronous multi-channel capability is also supported for cloud contribution, whereby a BRIDGE LIVE system can send signals to a Comprimato Live Transcoder cloud instance, thereby ensuring multi-source synchronicity for delivery to various CDNs, platforms, and cloud services as IP video.  

Synchronous Multi-Channel Transport can be scaled up from a single BRIDGE LIVE pair to multiple pairs, enabling workflows where multiple BRIDGE LIVE systems can receive SDI and send SDI to multiple BRIDGE LIVE systems simultaneously. 

HDR is also supported for end-to-end SDI workflows.

NDI Encode/Decode/Transcode

BRIDGE LIVE capabilities can be optionally expanded to include NDI (Network Device Interface), the high-quality, real-time, low-latency IP video standard. BRIDGE LIVE can support up to 8x simultaneous 60p HD NDI encodes/decodes or 4x 60p UltraHD NDI encode/decode to/from SDI (BRIDGE LIVE model dependent). BRIDGE LIVE’s NDI functionality offers:

  • SDI to NDI (encode)
  • NDI to SDI (decode)
  • IP Video Streams to NDI (transcode)
  • NDI to IP Video Streams (transcode)
  • Multiple Discovery Servers

Used in conjunction with BRIDGE LIVE’s broad codec and protocol support, collaboration between geographically separated (remote) NDI facilities can be realized.

Hardware

BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4 supports up to 4x UltraHD 12G-SDI for UltraHD I/O in 1RU. Dual 10 GigE ports provide robust network connectivity, and dual power supplies offer added peace of mind.

BRIDGE LIVE 3G-8 supports up to 8x 3G-SDI simultaneously for multi-channel HD in 1RU. Dual 10 GigE ports provide network connectivity, and the system features dual power supplies.

Administration, monitoring, and access to both BRIDGE LIVE models are supported via either a network browser or local monitor via the device’s built-in DisplayPort. Indirect agnostic monitoring and automation are supported via both REST API and SNMP.

Annual Maintenance

BRIDGE LIVE's optional annual maintenance purchase provides:

REMI (Remote Production) Synchronous Multi-Channel Transport

BRIDGE LIVE can take independent SDI source inputs and maintain their synchronous relationship while transporting the content to end-point destinations.

This functionality can take place between a pair of BRIDGE LIVE units for a synchronous end-to-end SDI workflow, often referred to as SDI backhaul or site-to-site SDI workflows. BRIDGE LIVE’s synchronous multi-channel capability is also supported for cloud contribution, whereby a BRIDGE LIVE system can send to a cloud instance of Comprimato Live Transcoder software for delivery to various platforms / cloud services as IP video.

REMI Synchronous Multi-Channel Transport for Backhaul

For Site-to-Site SDI (SDI backhaul) workflows, BRIDGE LIVE’s bidirectional functionality enables it to simultaneously function as an encoder and a decoder. Consequently, references to “BRIDGE LIVE Tx” or “BRIDGE LIVE Rx” solely describe the unit’s status rather than referring to products that support only encoding or decoding, necessitating the purchase of multiple devices. 

BRIDGE LIVE Synchronous Multi-Channel Transport functionality provides an easy and repeatable way to ensure synchronous SDI video sources can be fed to an encoding BRIDGE LIVE Tx, then be timestamped, transported, and ultimately output from the decoding BRIDGE LIVE Rx with each SDI signal in lockstep with each other.  

Synchronous Multi-Channel Transport can be scaled up from a single BRIDGE LIVE pair to additional BRIDGE LIVE pairs to enable workflows where multiple BRIDGE LIVE systems can receive SDI and send it to multiple BRIDGE LIVE systems outputting SDI, all in synchronicity. HDR is also supported for end-to-end SDI workflows.

One-to-One HD

One BRIDGE LIVE 3G-8 in Tx mode (acting as SDI encoder), and one BRIDGE LIVE 3G-8 in Rx mode (acting as SDI decoder) can preserve end-to-end synchronicity between up to 8x HD sources.

Many-to-Many UltraHD

One BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4 unit in Tx mode, sending to one BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4 units in Rx mode, preserves synchronicity across 4x UltraHD streams. 

When deploying a Many-to-Many scenario, a common reference/genlock must be used and supplied to all of the BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4 encoding/Tx systems (and the associated SDI source equipment). Similarly, a common reference/genlock must be used and supplied to all the BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4 decoding/Rx systems and the associated SDI destination equipment.

One-to-Many HD

One BRIDGE LIVE 3G-8 operating as Tx (Transmit, SDI encoder) and two or more BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4s operating as Rx (Receive, SDI decoders) can preserve end-to-end synchronicity between up to 4x HD sources from BRIDGE LIVE and up to 8x HD sources from BRIDGE LIVE 3G-8, which are being received and decoded by multiple BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4s as Rx units.

In this case, the multiple BRIDGE LIVEs operating as Rx systems could be located in separate locations, all receiving the same content simultaneously.

For example, the SDI outputs could be available for ingest to storage at one location while being broadcast live via a switcher in a separate location.

Contribution - Remote Video Transport 

For broadcast, BRIDGE LIVE provides an efficient mechanism for backhauling remote live SDI video sources to the media production facility, where they are converted back to SDI and made available on the internal facility's SDI router for ongoing production/transmission. 

Traditional secure lines for remote production can be very expensive, with additional fees charged for time before and after production starts and ends. BRIDGE LIVE allows source cameras and local programs to be transported using publicly available internet, with no penalty for early or extended use during production. BRIDGE LIVE also offers lower latency than traditional secure lines for time critical productions.

REMI - BRIDGE LIVE as a Receiving Hub

BRIDGE LIVE supports workflows where it is necessary to receive contribution streams from various third party encoders, IP cameras, or AJA HELO Plus for conversion to SDI at a production facility.  

For example, BRIDGE LIVE could receive UDP or HLS from AJA HELO Plus, SRT from a camera or encoder, and NDI (locally) from AJA BRIDGE NDI, or software such as an NLE, an NDI camera, or a third-party hardware-based encoder.

BRIDGE LIVE offers a comprehensive platform for live video streaming. Streaming support includes SRT, HLS, RTMP/S, RTP/UDP, and MPEG-TS. These standard streaming protocols provide wide support for services such as Twitch, YouTube Live, and Facebook Live.

BRIDGE LIVE offers flexibility for multiple inputs, supports a broad range of formats and bit rates, as well as metadata and redundancy.

BRIDGE LIVE can simultaneously deliver different stream types to partners for direct-to-audience delivery while streaming to CDNs. Partners can then retransmit, transcode, or store these streams.

Delivery - Encoding for Content Distribution

For Studios and Broadcast applications, BRIDGE LIVE facilitates the primary distribution of finished and mastered content to partners for subsequent streaming to audiences. 

BRIDGE LIVE can provide ABR (Adaptive Bit Rate) ladder profiles or hand-offs for OTT packaging. For example, encoding to H.264 for hand-off with ABR ladder profiles, including pointing the ladder profile directly to a local packager or CDN. 

BRIDGE LIVE can also provide multi-format/rate/bit rate material via HLS. The combined outputs within the HLS stream are presented as a “playlist,” meaning that devices (e.g., phones or tablets) or software (e.g., web browsers) can select a particular format, frame rate, and bit rate based on device characteristics and connectivity.

Delivery - Live Production Encoding

Telcos, IPTV, and cable operators are often presented with an SDI source or a live event or live production, which is needed as a simple MPEG-Transport Stream with an H.264/H.262 encode. The delivered stream may be required for further processing (storage, production) or streamed directly to an IPTV/Cable network.

Inside the box along with BRIDGE LIVE, power cables and rack rails will be a BRIDGE LIVE Quick Start Guide. This will contain unique passwords for login purposes.

Use the “admin” user to set up BRIDGE LIVE using the GUI. The “transcoder” user is used for command line interface administration. The "IPMI" user is for server management tasks such as remote restart or shutdown. However, the use of IPMI has security implications which are the responsibility of the customer to manage. See the BRIDGE LIVE Manual for more information.


Yes. The same Username/Password is required to gain access to the GUI, whether locally (via Keyboard, Mouse, and Display Port Monitor) or remotely via the browser.

Note: Login to GUI (via “admin”), whether local or remote, is a different login to command line “transcoder” user.


There is no practical limitation. The UI will report if two admins are changing the same pipeline at the same time.

Correct. The SSH is disabled by default and will need to be enabled via the GUI using the “admin” credentials.


IPMI is used to remotely reboot or shutdown BRIDGE LIVE. However, use of IPMI can introduce possible security implications for your network. AJA is not responsible for issues that arise from making use of the IPMI functionality. See the BRIDGE LIVE Manual for further details.


You can remotely reboot BRIDGE LIVE by using SSH connection to issue the "reboot" command with escalated rights, by using REST commands, or via IPMI.


Yes, for example, during installation, the automatic installer sets the time-zone to America/Los Angeles, but you may be located in a different time zone. You might also have offices in different time zones and prefer the servers to have the same system time, potentially for monitoring purposes.


Yes, the logs are available for a week.


Default Route sets which of the Gateways should be set as the default for the system. It is primarily used to ensure BRIDGE LIVE uses the selected Ethernet port for internal communication on the local network. This avoids problems that can occur when communications are attempted over two Ethernet ports simultaneously. Additionally useful if you have NICs connected to two different networks; it helps define which port to use for routing outbound communication.

 


A “Pipeline” is the overall setup, from the input source to decode, encode or transcode of output format(s); i.e., an output can be comprised of multiple stream formats and destinations.

Note: For UltraHDp60, BRIDGE LIVE can either be Inputting or Outputting SDI.


UltraHD I/O must be single wire 12G-SDI. 4-wire UltraHD is not supported.


BRIDGE LIVE is able to pass-through many varieties of metadata (in accordance with SMPTE-2038).  BRIDGE LIVE doesn’t explicitly recognize OP42, so no notification will take place. OP47 is not supported.


Currently, BRIDGE LIVE does not support pass through of Dolby-E.

Yes, this is available. A warning (not an error) will be received, since this is flagged as an atypical set up.


A22: BRIDGE LIVE runs on CentOS, so a basic Linux ping service is available on it, which can be used to conduct an RTT ping.


Yes, for workflows tested BRIDGE LIVE unit can handle 4x 1080p outputs. However, always be aware of how much CPU and GPU resources are being utilized. As a general rule, keep the CPU and GPU below 80% usage. There are multiple conditions that affect, resource utilization, such as; how many channels are running, what video processing is required, and codec used.


Yes, although not native within BRIDGE LIVE, an SDI monitor for SDI out and VLC, or some other software receiver for Streams. Additional details can be found in the manual.


(i) Adding a new Sink takes advantage of the already encoded signal and enables easy replication of the output on a new IP, port, NIC, or even encapsulating it in SRT.

Example: For 10 remote clients who all want to view the same SRT stream, simply use “Configure Sinks” and within the same Pipeline – add sinks by bumping the port number for each additional remote client; E.g., client 1 – port 5051, client 2 – port 5052, and so on.

(ii) A new Output stream is used if the video configuration or bandwidth needs to vary between outputs.

Example: For 10 remote clients who all want to view the same SRT stream, but 5 of them want 20Mbps, and the other 5 need to use a lower quality, 8Mbps. In this case, we cannot only use “Configure Sinks” and different port numbers. We must create two separate output streams – one for 20Mbps and another for 8Mbps, and then again use the port numbers to provide 5 of each for the receiving clients.

(iii) Resource Utilization

There is no notable resource utilization differential between using Add Sink vs. Add Output Stream, where all settings are equal.


BRIDGE LIVE supports RTMP on input and output. RTMPS is only supported on output.


The support for 120Hz is there for stream support only. BRIDGE LIVE can receive a 120p stream and make 60p SDI out of it (halve the rate). There is currently no 120p SDI I/O planned.


Yes. Input support is across both AVC TS segments (for H.264) and Fragmented MP4 (for both H.265 and H.264). Output support is H.264 only.


Yes. Currently BRIDGE LIVE defaults to CBR for highest quality results. However, by loading the “low_latency.ini settings file” under “Advanced Setup”, you will now have access to a VBR setup. This can be used as is, or else edited to provide additional customization.


Latency refers to the very slight delay between a signal entering BRIDGE LIVE and then leaving the system following any processing.


Latency below 150ms is achievable, depending on processing and other factors.

Low latencies can most easily be achieved by loading the “low_latency.ini settings file” available under Advanced Setup. This will load a low latency preset which utilizes VBR instead of CBR.

Latency can be even more tightly optimized within the BRIDGE LIVE interface by tuning the system using custom .ini files that can be saved and loaded under Advanced Setup.


BRIDGE LIVE measures latency by comparing the time when a frame is received and when it is sent out. The reported latency in the UI is the difference between those two values.

• Specifically, BRIDGE LIVE measures from the first packet on input to the last packet on output. With SDI sources the whole frame is received at once, so the timer starts once the whole frame is available.


(i) The SRT Overhead parameter (SRT Output):

The amount over Total Bitrate that can be surpassed in order to recover lost data.

(ii) The SRT Latency parameter (ms) (SRT Input):

The time of intended delay of network packets (a buffer) that is allowed for the connection to slow down the data in transmission in order to provide a time slot to resend lost UDP packets if they occur.

(iii) If we combine that;

• SRT Overhead is a parameter that defines how much data can be used for retransmission.

• SRT Latency sets how long the receiver should wait for retransmissions.

SRT Overhead and Latency are also explained in the Manual.


There are many software applications that can be used to receive the streaming output from BRIDGE LIVE. VLC player and vMix are a few examples.


• Frame rate 50% down-conversion (e.g. 60p->30p, 59.94->29.97, 50p->25p)

• Frame rate 50% up-conversion (50i->50p)

Note: there is no support for Standards Conversion: e.g. 25->30, 50->60, 23.976->24.00, 59.94i->60p


Electronic Programming Guides and Interactive Programming Guides are menu-based systems that provide users of television, radio, and other media applications with continuously updated menus. These display scheduling information for current and upcoming broadcast programming. BRIDGE LIVE will take the information and pass it through as metadata.


Please refer to the BRIDGE LIVE Manual.


Currently, the format supported is RTMP (output only), which is used by some streaming services or CDNs. Other formats, such as HLS, DASH, or CMAF, are not supported at this time.


BRIDGE LIVE outputs streams in MPEG-TS format (with H.264 or HEVC inside), and those streams can be pointed to an external OTT packager (HLS or DASH).

• Often, customers prefer to have a separate packager since it is a resource intensive task.


ABR is a term used for the description of streaming technology where multiple variants of video are encoded. Each of the variants has different quality and/or resolution and bitrate. All the variants are described in a protocol-specific playlist, chunked to pieces, and published. An end-consumer is provided with a variant that best suits their connection. BRIDGE LIVE supports the encoding of multiple variants with different video quality by creating multiple output streams out of a single input stream. Other parts of ABR distribution have to be facilitated using an external packager (chunks TS output from transcoder and creates a playlist) or CDN (publishing to the internet).


ABR ladder is basically a configuration of output streams, where each stream has different resolution and bitrate (potentially even quality, audio channels, etc.). So, in BRIDGE LIVE this is created as just a pipeline with multiple output streams. Provided the outputs are pointed to the right place, with the correct configuration, then this should do the trick for delivering to a packaging appliance/service.

For clarity then, there is no special type of output, it's just about the pipeline configuration.

Note: It is challenging to provide a recommended pipeline setup for ABR, since this is a deliverable requirement that may change from project to project.


BRIDGE LIVE supports SCTE-104 to SCTE-35 conversion on the encoding end (i.e. taking SCTE-104 from the SDI source, converting it into SCTE-35 (the native format for TS), and then transmitting).

Since BRIDGE LIVE does not currently support SCTE 35 to SCTE-104 conversion on the receiving side, one workaround we can suggest today for a BRIDGE LIVE Tx to Bridge LIVE Rx scenario, is to transport SCTE 104 without conversion. That way it can be put back to SDI on the receiving end. However, this might not be supported by receivers other than BRIDGE LIVE.


MPTS (Multi-Program Transport Stream) is supported only on input because it is a fairly easy to read MPTS individual program, while it is fairly complex to multiplex a number of SPTS (Single-Program Transport Stream) into the MPTS output. Plus, there are specialized devices for that purpose.


No, this model is a turnkey system with a single GPU.


Not at this time.


BRIDGE LIVE duplicates the RTP packets out of both NICs. The receiving BRIDGE LIVE performs a packet by packet comparison of the incoming signals and utilizes the packet that responds first and the originating signal quality is maintained.


Try using a 500 pixel image instead of 1000 or above to remove blocky edges. If this does not work, it will be a function of the (a) codec, (b) quality settings, and (c) the encode/decode difficulty of the video. For example, suddenly fast moving high dynamic range content may produce this result with the logo on occasion.


No, it will be inserted only for the output stream it was uploaded in. However, the logo will be available for all other output streams in the drop-down menu, so you can choose which outputs will get the logo and which will not. E.g. for internet streaming, you want to include the logo, but you don’t want the logo for another output created for remote production purposes.


The (now EOL) IPR-1G devices were created several years ago, with different specifications, workflows, and customers in mind.


BRIDGE LIVE does support using all three display ports from the NVIDIA card, which would result in a cloned screen. There is no unnecessary taxing on the GPU.
