KONA for PC Supported System Configurations

The AJA support and engineering team target only Enterprise Class Workstations. The slot placement is based on an engineering analysis of the motherboard for performance and available bandwidth. These are the required HD / 2K workflow configurations for the KONA product line.


Expansion Slot Placement for: Mac Pro 2019

 

List of AJA supported PCIe cards:
KONA 5, KONA 4, KONA HDMI, KONA 1 and KONA LHi

List of AJA supported Thunderbolt devices:
Io 4K Plus, Io 4K

NOTES:

  • Any slot will work with an 8-lane card, but with slots 5,6,7 preferred.
  • If using an Apple After Burner card that must be placed in slot 5 (since it is a 16-lane card).
  • AJA KONA LHi is physically accommodated by the new Mac Pro in slots 3, 4 and 5. However when running with an Afterburner card in slot 5, you will need to utilize slots 3 or 4. In the event that those slots are utilized for a third party graphics card in combination with an Afterburner card, this will preclude the use of KONA LHi.

Special Note for ordering KONA 5 for use with Mac Pro 2019:

There are two choices:

  • PN KONA-5-R0 uses ATX power, and so can be used in other relevant Mac or PC host systems. However, a 3rd party ATX cable kit for the Mac Pro 2019 will be required: Link Here.
  • PN: KONA-5-R0-S01 will use PCIe slot power in Mac Pro 2019, but this KONA model should not be used in any other Mac or PC host system.

Expansion Slot Placement for: Mac Pro 2008-2013 (includes Nehalem and Westmere versions)

 

For optimal performance of the KONA 4 and KONA LHe Plus, AJA recommends slot 2. See Option 1 for slot placement. The KONA LHi operates properly in slots 2 and 3.

Slots 1 and 2 share bandwidth in this system so, other high bandwidth cards like a storage controller or Red rocket should go on one of these slots, and the KONA can go on slot CPU2_SLOT2. If the KONA card goes in slot 1 or 2, the other slot should NOT contain a high performance card. Example: If a KONA card is in slot 1, Slot 2 should only be used for a low performance card like a 1x PCIe card, or not used at all.

If you are unsure of the slot configuration as used in your machine, it can be determined by using the Expansion Slot Utility application. This application is found in the following directory location on your Mac Pro: System/Library/CoreServices. The correct configuration is with the slots configured as follows:

x4 for slot 4
x4 for slot 3
x1 for slot 2
x16 for slot 1

AJA only supports the PCI-X and PCI versions of the KONA cards in slot 1 of the Intel XServe. The PCIe versions of the KONA cards should not be used in the Intel XServe. The AJA PCI-X and PCI cards (KONA3X, KONALH) can be used in the Apple Intel XServe with the Apple PCI-X riser, P/N 922-7860.
